Descriptions

Introduction to Tsolo:

Charles Doane of Sail Magazine calls the Gulfstar 50 "An affordable Big Boat"

Now a sailing classic, the Gulfstar 50 is known for its sailing qualities; a fast hull shape and capable offshore in heavy seas.  It's solid fiberglass construction and versatile ketch rig and affordable price point make it an ideal and popular World Cruiser.  The interior layout and finish is perfectly suited for life at sea offering ample storage for long journeys and all the comforts of home.

Transitioning to a life at sea as a live-aboard is a process and transforming the yacht can be a long process of trial and error.  Tsolo has been lovingly transformed by its owners after several years at sea as they have traveled around the world, constantly updating and improving the home on the water.  Comfort, storage, efficiency, safety, security, stability, ; these are the concerns of every sailor as they live and travel on the water.  Preparing the yacht to meet these concerns is a painstaking and costly process with many hidden circumstances, making it difficult to get it right the first time.  Tsolo is about as well sorted a yacht as you will find with many clever modifications above and below decks putting these concerns to rest.

Interior Layout:

The Gulfstar 50' Ketch is a 2 cabin / 2 head layout featuring a forward "V" Berth Cabin with a forward head and an Aft "Owner's" Cabin and head.  The owners have made numerous modifications to increase storage space and improve functionality of the life-aboard boat.

Coming down the companionway you immediately find the very large "L" shaped Galley set to port and large reverse "L" shaped Nav Table set to starboard.

Moving forward into the comfortable Main Salon, there is a long settee to starboard; a single berth with shelving above, to port is a "U" shaped settee and large dinner table capable of seating 8, 3 overhead antique brass lamps and new upholstery.

Moving forward into the "V" berth cabin, there is a marine head to port; this space has been divided to create a small and secure "sea head" and a storage locker for sails and canvas.  The "V" Berth cabin is comfortable with 2 lockers with shelves, 5 drawers and shelves added port and starboard above for more storage.

Aft of the galley to starboard is a passageway that leads to the aft "Owner's" cabin and head.  The Owners cabin features a comfortable double berth with 7 drawers under, 2 large lockers with shelves a hanging locker and dresser.  There is additional storage in both port and starboard bench seats and shelving added at both ends of the berth.  The aft head includes a vanity and shower with additional storage space behind the head.

Hull and Deck Construction

The Gulfstar 50 was the best boat Gulfstar ever built and also the most popular, with 172 hulls launched during a six-year production run that ended in 1980. Designed by Vincent Lazzara himself, the Gulfstar 50 boasts superior interior joinery, generous accommodations, robust construction, and a well proportioned hull and rig. These days it is one of the best values on the brokerage market in a larger center-cockpit boat.

Construction is simple and straightforward, with a solid hull laminate composed of multiple layers of mat and woven roving.  The hull is stiffened with full bulkheads and furniture components that are fiberglass tabbed in place. The deck is balsa-cored, with a through-bolted joint glassed over from below. The full-length rudder skeg is also bolted in place. The ballast, which consists of lead chunks embedded in concrete slurry, is encapsulated within the long fin keel.

Tsolo has consistently been updated and repaired as necessary.  The hull bottom has peeled removing 3 mils of the outside skin, all thru-hull fittings were removed and replaced in the process.  The hull was re-laminated with vinlylester resin and layers of 450 gram matt fiberglass then coated with an epoxy barrier coat and antifouling bottom paint.

Spars and Rigging:

Tsolo is the popular ketch rigged Gulstar 50 updated to include a removable Cutter Inner Stay.  This is the perfect sail plan for offshore offering endless versatility for whatever the weather and seas bring you.

The sail plan is not particularly large, still, the GS 50 is not exactly a slouch when it comes to speed, though it does like moderate to heavy weather better than the light stuff.  It’s not hard to keep the boat moving at 7 knots or better under working sail if the wind is blowing over 12 knots.  Below that you’ll need to break out spinnakers and mizzen staysails to maintain good speed.  Sheeting angles are not very narrow, as the mast spreaders are wide and the chainplates are set nearly all the way outboard but this does offer a very safe rig geometry.

  • All new standing rigging in 2004
