Looking to downsize from that old 1990s raceboat or upsize from a centerboard boat from your youth, the J/80 is the perfect platform for your future sailing and racing pursuits. Consider the benefits:
- Very easy to drysail a J/80. You can store the J/80 on the trailer and hoist the boat into the water at a local yacht or sailing club facilities, or fork-lift the boat into water at a local boatyard. No dirty annual bottom paint, no wet slip fees, no weekly divers to clean the bottom. You can usually be sailing in 15 minutes after arriving to the boat.
- Big cockpit and high boom. Half the boat is cockpit for sailor comfort and there is plenty of clearance under the boom during tacks and jibes. Bring the kids, there is plenty of room on board
- Very active local fleet. In Annapolis, you can sail the J/80 in the AYC Wednesday night series, the Thursday night J-Port series, and the Friday night EYC beer-can series, as well as weekend racing. 6 to 10 boats show up consistently for the Wednesday night and Thursday night series. Very competitive in PHRF with ratings 120-126
- Stable platform with a 5 ft deep bulb keel. Sailed with 3-5 persons, the boat doesn’t require a big crew to organize and manage. Lifelines make it easier to move around the boat
- Exciting sailing with the large asymmetrical spinnaker. The boat will start planning in around 13 kts of breeze with the spinnaker up.
- Trailerable with a mid-size pickup or SUV. Boat and Trailer total weight around 4700 lbs
- Paired with an electric outboard, it is very easy to move the J/80 when the wind dies. Battery power eliminates the need for storing a gas outboard and associated fuel below. Electric outboards are much easier to mount on the transom due to their lower weight and smaller size of the drive unit
Due to high interest in the J/80, J-boats has re-started manufacturing of new boats. These boats are finished in Bristol RI. Pricing starts at $70,000 for a new J/80 delivered and rigged in Annapolis
